The council is currently consulting on a proposal to charge disabled blue badge holders to park in the Borough’s public car parks. The original consultation did not include our members, so we have received the information very late in the day.
If this issue affects you, then read on…..

You can read a letter we received from Ben Stephens, Head of Parking, inviting views on the consultation.

Currently blue badge holders are permitted to park in these car parks free of charge, whether or not they use a designated disabled parking bay.

It is the Council’s view that the purpose of the blue badge scheme and designated bays, is to reserve parking in convenient locations, rather than to be a discount scheme.

They are not proposing to reduce the number of disabled motorists’ bays in car parks and access will be preserved. They are also proposing to extend the normal 3 minute period to get a Pay & Display ticket to 20 minutes, to allow disabled drivers to make a return journey back to their vehicle

A report is to be presented to the Environment PDS Committee on the 5th April 2011. Here’s a link to the full report is attached below. The relevant section is 4.4 (page 6 and 7)

Bromley Mencap only became aware of this proposal recently and the deadline for final views and observations is 30th April 2011 when the lead officer will report back to Committee Members.
