The 1990 NHS & Community Care Act, meant huge changes in the support for people with learning disabilities and the services they received. There was a big debate about whether Bromley Mencap could work with the Council as a service provider, yet still retain its campaigning role. We decided we could do both. We started to apply for grants and to run our own services. One of our first projects was holiday playschemes that gave parents a break in the school holidays and provided children with much-needed activities that were suitable for them. We also ran Carers groups and social activities.
