Bromley Mencap Training Centre

Our Training Centre offers a welcoming and well-equipped environment for learners. Facilities include:

• Two teaching classrooms (Sapphire and Emerald Rooms)

• An IT Suite (Amber Room)

• A communal space, the Magenta Room, ideal for relaxing, reading, or group activities

• A fully equipped kitchen area

• Outdoor garden seating

These spaces give learners the chance to study, develop practical skills, and enjoy time together in a supportive setting.

The Training Centre offers recognised accredited qualifications in partnership with Open College Network London (OCN London).

Our curriculum is carefully considered, to reflect the needs of the local and wider community as well as tailored to any individual learning goals and aspirations. As standard, learners will be supported with employability skills and vocational learning through accredited qualifications. Topics and subjects are chosen to further support learners with developing their social, communication and interaction skills, appropriate friendships and relationships with others. Our aim is to also facilitate access to the local community and community services.

Our curriculum is delivered by trained and experienced tutors in small groups. We design and deliver subject content in the curriculum offer that allows learners to transfer key skills and knowledge. In lessons, learners are encouraged to discuss, debate, and share their views on what is important to them. Core Mathematics and English skills are embedded, and technology is utilised to enable confidence in digital and computer skills. The curriculum is sequenced so that new knowledge and skills build on what learners know and can do, and learners can work towards defined end points.

Our curriculum enables learners to gain greater confidence and independence. Learners know more, can remember, and apply more, meaning that they can do and achieve more when at home or in the workplace. Learner’s social, communication and interaction skills continue to improve and develop through the wider tutorials and activities completed. Learners achieve qualifications and experience that will enable them to progress into paid or voluntary employment, work experience, further study and learning.

We are proud to be supported by the Jack Petchey Foundation. Their funding helps us purchase much-needed resources for the Training Centre and organise trips and activities for our learners.

Learners also take part by nominating and voting for Jack Petchey Award winners. These awards celebrate young people who go the extra mile – showing kindness, being supportive to their peers, or making a positive contribution to the centre.

Bromley Mencap’s Station Road Training Centre Praised in First Ofsted Inspection
Ofsted has confirmed that we are making Reasonable Progress in all areas, recognising our strong foundations and commitment to continuous improvement. Ofsted defines Reasonable Progress as having a positive impact across all key themes of the inspection. The inspection highlighted the strengths of our provision and identified areas for further development.

Key Strengths of Our Provision

✅ Tailored Curriculum – Designed in response to local demand for more post-16 education opportunities for young people with moderate learning difficulties. Our curriculum equips learners with essential knowledge and skills for employment and independent living. Ofsted noted:
“Leaders and managers have developed a curriculum with a clear aim to teach young people the essential knowledge and skills they need to gain employment and live more independently.”

✅ Dedicated Staff & Support – Our experienced team provides personalised guidance, fostering a welcoming and inclusive learning environment. Ofsted highlighted:
“Leaders, managers, and staff know the learners well. They generate a warm sense of belonging and community at the college.”

✅ Positive Learning Environment – Learners feel safe, supported, and engaged, with strong attendance and clear personal and academic progress. A range of teaching strategies and mediums are used to enhance learning for each individual. As Ofsted observed:
“Learners enjoy attending and show exemplary behaviour on site. They attend well and all achieve their main qualification.”

✅ Safeguarding & Wellbeing – We maintain a strong safeguarding culture, ensuring learners feel secure and confident to raise concerns. A wide range of topics are covered to enhance learners’ understanding of safety and wellbeing. As Ofsted confirmed:
“Learners feel safe. They trust staff and are confident to raise any concerns about their safety or welfare.”

Areas for Further Development

• Enhancing English & Maths Teaching – While these skills are embedded in daily learning, we will further assess learners’ starting points and refine teaching strategies to maximise progress.
• Expanding Personalised Career Pathways – We are adapting our curriculum to align more closely with each learner’s long-term vocational goals.
• Improving Progress Tracking – While tutors closely monitor student development, we will implement clearer recording methods to track progress more effectively.
• Strengthening Online & Extremism Awareness – We will expand digital safety and radicalisation prevention training within our safeguarding curriculum.
