Volunteer with us
We have been supported by a committed team of volunteers for many years. We welcome their contribution on either a regular or occasional basis. Volunteers are vital to the work of the charity and we offer support to anyone interested in volunteering for us.
Join our volunteer team – make a difference, have fun!
Voluntary work requires time and commitment, but it can bring many rewards, such as new friends, satisfaction, confidence, and work experience.
As a minimum commitment, we ask that you are able to commit to volunteering for at least a 12 month period as this ensures that we can provide appropriate training and supervision, and maximise the benefit to our volunteers.
Volunteering opportunities are available for people aged 16 and over.

Gym Induction Group Leader
Bromley and Lewisham Mencap are looking for passionate, local volunteers for an exciting new project.

This Autumn, we are introducing Lewisham-based disabled members to their local leisure centres and supporting them to become more active.

Benefits: You will have the chance to inspire and support others on their health and well-being journey. You will also be provided with training, an induction and access to other volunteering opportunities at our social clubs, day trips and other events.

Drop-In Centre Receptionist Volunteer
The Drop–in Centre Receptionist Volunteer will be responsible for managing the waiting room of our weekly Friday drop–in centre at Rutland House.
The role will include:
• Greeting Guests as they arrive at the drop–in centre
• Taking down relevant information about them, their visit and any previous support from Bromley Mencap/Bromley Well
• Noting the details of anyone that is attending with them and why they are being accompanied
• Adding all attendance to a separate fire register and taking not of any evacuation assistance that may be required
• Engaging with guests in a sympathetic and appropriate way to better understand their issue before recommending them to an advocate
• To identify if the support requested is not offered by Bromley Mencap and signpost them to other services in the borough
• To identify if guests attending are eligible for support from Bromley Mencap (E.g. Disabled or has a learning difficulty and living in the borough of Bromley)
• To undertake essential training required of all Bromley Mencap volunteers
Our weekly drop in centre is open every Friday (excluding public holidays) from 10:00 – 16:00 at Rutland House, 44 Masons Hill, Bromley, BR2 9JG.
This role will require regularly attending the drop in centre during it’s opening hours. If you are unable to attend a session or won’t be available for the whole session on a particular week, At least 24 hour notice is recommended.
The drop in centre is open to support any members of the public living with a disability or learning difficulty in the borough of Bromley.

Young Carers Events Volunteer
Bromley Mencap needs volunteers to help run our successful programme of events for Young Carers. We support Young Carers aged 4 to 19 to manage caring relationships whilst enjoying childhood.
You will need to be friendly, approachable and enjoy supporting others. You won’t need to participate in the activities.
Volunteering in this role would help develop skills in working with children and young people, as well as making a positive difference to the lives of others.

Social Enterprise Support Volunteer
Description: To support the Social Enterprise Coordinator to prepare and deliver activities across our market-stall microenterprises (coffee, plants (seasonal) and information on our bikes), and to help ensure the smooth running of the stall.
The volunteer will support our disabled trainees to take part in structured work experience, using practical demonstrations, simple guidance and friendly encouragement. You will help trainees work through tasks such as customer service, stock checks, stall setup, serving coffee to customers and keeping the stall tidy. You will also support learning by answering questions, revisiting areas of difficulty, and helping trainees build confidence. At the end of each session, you will help tidy the stall, return equipment to Rutland House, and liaise with the Social Enterprise Coordinator so trainee progress can be recorded and monitored.
Skills Description: You will need to be friendly, approachable and a good communicator, with strong interpersonal and teamwork skills. You should enjoy supporting adults with learning disabilities and be comfortable in a busy public environment. An interest in coffee, hospitality, plants, or bikes is helpful but not essential. You should be willing to learn simple stall tasks and follow guidance from the coordinator and you should be comfortable lifting heavy objects between you and the coordinator to manage (the heaviest item is an 18kg coffee machine). You will need to meet the coordinator at our main offices at Rutland house for 9am to load the vehicle, and then finish the day at Rutland House at 5pm once unloading is finished.

All volunteer roles require references and a DBS check (depending on the nature of the role).
Volunteers will be provided with appropriate induction and training to perform their roles and will be allocated a named lead within Bromley Mencap.
New roles are subject to a probationary period in order to ensure that the volunteer has been allocated the most appropriate role and are performing in line with the standards expected by Bromley Mencap. The length of probationary period will depend on the number of hours volunteered and will be agreed at the outset of volunteering.

Catering Project Volunteer
In this role, you will support the Facilitator to deliver sessions for our disabled students, in catering and to support the students to undertake the tasks required. You will support the Facilitator to deliver the training session to our disabled students as planned, and support our students to work through the lesson for the day, using practical demonstrations, utilising on-line resources and guiding them through the process as required. The volunteer will support learning by answering questions, re-visiting areas of difficulties and generally consolidating the students learning, and support the students to tidy up the workshop and return tools to their correct place at the end of the session. You will provide updates to the Facilitator at the end of the session, so student progress can be recorded and monitored.
You will need to be friendly, approachable and a good communicator and with good interpersonal and teamwork skills. You will need a good knowledge and interest in catering.
Volunteering in this role would help develop skills in working with disabled adults, as well as making a positive difference to the lives of others. Volunteering at The Lodge provides an opportunity to meet new people and make new friends.
Sessions are held at The Lodge, Norman Park, Hook Farm Road, Bromley, BR2 9SX and the timings are usually 10.00-12:30 or 1:30-3:30 across different days of the week.

Telephone Support Service Volunteer
Do you have a few hours a week to spare and do you like chatting to people on the phone?
We are looking for a volunteer to support our Bromley Well telephone call service, which supports people with a physical disability and people with a learning disability. You will be given a list of clients to contact regularly to ensure they are keeping well, looking after themselves and getting the support they need.
If you like talking to people on the phone and are a good listener, you could really make a difference to our clients’ lives and prevent people falling into isolation.
By providing assisting us, you can make a really positive impact upon the lives of some people when they most need it.
You will be provided with a list of clients to call regularly; and we will provide you with a ‘script’ & some question-prompts to follow. You would be required to record the details of each telephone conversation and report back to the support worker.
The role is home-based and times are flexible (up to 4hrs per week).
