We were approached by the Council to ask if we would be interested in developing a much needed residential or respite care home for adults. A Bromley Mencap supporter, Mrs Johnson, was selling her bungalow and huge garden next door to Scads Hill Occupation Centre and was adamant that land should be used for people with learning disabilities. We worked with the Council and a local Housing Association to develop plans that led to Bromley Mencap forming Bromcare Homes to act as managing agents for 6 houses, with adults with learning disabilities living together in groups of 4. Work began on the buildings in 1985 and in 1988 we handed over keys to our first tenants.
