Welfare Cuts Risk Pushing Disabled People into Hardship.

Mar 19, 2025

Statement from Anna McEwen, CEO of Bromley Mencap:
The Government’s announcement of the “biggest shake-up to the welfare system in a generation” raises serious concerns for disabled people and their families. While we welcome efforts to support more disabled people into employment, these reforms fail to acknowledge the significant barriers that many disabled people face when seeking work.
At Bromley Mencap, we work closely with disabled people who want to work but struggle to find opportunities due to inaccessible workplaces, a lack of employer understanding, and the additional costs of disability, known as the disability price tag. Many disabled people rely on financial support just to meet their daily living costs—without it, they risk falling deeper into poverty and isolation.
We urge the Government to engage directly with disabled people and disability organisations like Bromley Mencap to ensure these changes do not push some of the most vulnerable in our society into further hardship.
We remain committed to supporting disabled people into meaningful employment—but this must be done in a way that recognises the real challenges they face and provides the right support, not threats of financial penalties.
Tell the Government the cost of cuts would be catastrophic. Sign Scope’s petition and get your voice heard: https://campaigns.scope.org.uk/page/165719/petition/1
